Limoux is a pretty market town and sub-prefecture in the French département of Aude, a part of the ancient Languedoc province and the present-day Languedoc-Roussillon région. It lies on the river Aude about 30 km (19 mi) due south of Carcassonne.
Limoux is particularly well known for its convivial atmosphere, especially during the famous Carnival, one of the oldest in France (the first traces of which go back to the Middle Ages), which runs annually from January to March (on Saturdays and Sundays and during Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday) and lasts three months.
Thrice daily, the Fécos, groups of masked dancers, dressed in satin, dance under the arcades of la Place de la République. The show differs each time and... is free of charge !
Another not to be missed event : ´Toques et Clochers´(Chefs´ hats and Steeples) with the sale of wine by auction on Palm Sunday weekend.
Limoux obtained 3 flowers in the Flower decorated Towns and Villages contest.
The cafe scene is dominant in Limoux where food and drink represent the dominant cultural pastime.
Sights The heart of the town is the place de la République, a wide square with some fine stone arcading and a number of timber framed houses. Limoux straddles the River Aude and the banks are lined with grand houses, especially on the eastern side, the so-called Petite Ville (lit. ´Small City´). Limoux is an attractive place with a wonderful sense of fun. The town likes to party in a most unself-conscious way and for its own pleasure rather than for the sake of tourists. While worth visiting in itself, it is also an excellent base for discovering the history of the region and is ideally placed for exploring the coast, the mountains and some of the finest walking country in France. Weekly market every Friday (or Thursday if a public holiday falls on a Friday). Flea market or Brocante the first Sunday of each month on the Promenade du Tivoli. Evening markets on Tuesdays in July and August.
Places of interest The Musée Petiet (Tourist Information Office), Musée du Piano (Museum of the piano) CathaRama (a history of the Cathar movement). Winery tours at Sieur d´Arques and Aimery. Jardin aux Plantes la Bouichère - Flassian, 2 hectares of gardens which is home to various collections of increasingly rare plant varieties.
Blanquette and Crémant de Limoux :
The Benedictines founded an abbey at Saint Hilaire in the VIIth century. It was there, that almost a thousand years later, in 1531, a modest monk discovered the natural tendancy of a calm wine to sparkle. The first brut in the world was born!!! In 1938, the Blanquette de Limoux obtained its classification, followed in 1990 by that of the Crémant. In 1993, the AOC Limoux was happily updated. Limoux calmly renews with antiquity.
The Nougat A sweet made with almond paste and honey, it is one of the triumphs of local confectioners.
Limoux is about an hour and a quarter to the nearest ski station and is not only popular with skiers in winter but with walkers and cyclists who can enjoy special routes.
Limoux and the surrounding area is steeped in history and being Cathar country there are plenty of castles and abbeys th visit.
